What of Watstock?

Watstock was held in fine weather over the weekend of 24/25 July and as last year had a lot of visitors. Once the accounting is done it is to be expected that there will be a healthy surplus, which the Watstock Committee is proposing to give as grants to local, village, causes.
So what did you think of the show? What do you think of the whole idea of a music fest in the village over a weekend?
Let us have your comments on what you liked, what you didn’t like, whether it should be staged next year, any changes that could be made, in fact anything interesting – you know the drill. But please do tell us in your post whether you attended the event.

Climate Change

Norfolk County Council have introduced a policy of turning off street lights during the night-time period – midnight to 5.00 am in winter and 1.oo am to 5.00am in summer – on streets outside of city / town centres where there is no perceived risk . The policy will take some time to be fully implemented as all lights will have to be individually set. The reasons behind the policy are to save energy, reduce the county council’s carbon footprint and help keep down council tax charges.

In Watlington this policy will affect both the Meadows Estate and the Petersfield Estate. Other areas in the village will not be affected as the street lights are owned by the parish council.

Do you think the street lights should be turned off? Should the Parish Council adopt a similar policy? The Parish Council can see the argument for turning them off, but at the same time recognises that this might well reduce personal and property security. Maybe you think climate change is a good enough reason for this policy to be introduced or maybe you think climate change and global warming are just a load of hooey and what is happening is a natural climate cycle.

A Good Neighbour Scheme in Watlington?

IS THERE A NEED FOR A GOOD NEIGHBOURS SCHEME?

Is your village doing all it can to help each other in times of need? Do neighbours help each other? The idea of a need for a good neighbour support scheme was floated at the last Parish Council meeting and it was agreed that the best way forward was to invite ideas and discussion.

Would you, for example, like to see a scheme in place to support the most vulnerable in Watlington when a situation like the recent Big Freeze comes along? Or a scheme that runs all year? How should such a scheme be organised? Should it just be a transport help scheme or include other support, such as gardening or giving a helping hand, as well?

Whilst a lot of informal support already happens in Watlington, there are occasionally times when people may need a bit of help when there’s bad weather or maybe need a lift somewhere that’s a little difficult to get to.

If you think the village could benefit from a neighbour support scheme which provides assistance such as a lift to the Doctors surgery or trips to the shops or more we would like to hear from you.

Would you use a good neighbour support scheme for help?

Would you like to help your neighbours but not sure how to volunteer to help?

Let us know what you think – even if its only to have a moan that such a scheme should be needed in modern society!

Welcome to this new blog site for Watlington, hosted by Watlington Gossip. The aim of the blog is to raise issues that effect us in the village and invite comment. Items could be, for example, from the latest issue of the Gossip, from local news or the Parish Council.

Let us know if you want any item about the village to be raised. A couple of items coming up will be the County Council’s plan to turn off estate street lights overnight, support for the vulnerable during bad weather and plans to seek funding for a Multi-Use Games Area on the Recreation Ground.
